According to their about page, Little Bit Studio is a part of a larger company, Cupcake Digital who also creates educational apps. It is mind bending to realize that the most visually appealing and least obnoxious sounding (adult tolerable) of all the games we let our little one try out, are developed by two guys, a programmer (Scott Vann) and a designer (Jason Luber).
Little Bit Studio is best known for Bugs and Buttons or Bugs and Numbers games, but they have a package deal at the app store for $9.99 covering all of the Little Bit Studio bug games (all of which will have their own review post coming soon!) including:
- Bugs and Buttons
- alphabet
- pattern recognition
- problem solving
- Bugs and Buttons 2
- fine motor skills
- sorting
- balancing
- Bugs and Numbers
- counting
- money
- beginning fractions
- number recognition
- graduated stages
- Bug Art
- free form drawing
- advanced tracing
- bug races
- Bug Mazing
- fine motor skills
- critical thinking
- Bugs and Bubbles
- advanced levels from bugs and buttons
- graduated stages
The only game not included in the apple bundle, which I do not have but may get in the future is DialSafe Pro. I have some reservations about teaching a three-year-old exactly how to dial people on the telephone, so I think we will wait a few months. I can however see the value in the app and will be sure to fill you all in as soon as we pick it up.
None of these games, nor this developer are without high reviews already, but in the coming individual game posts I want to touch on the things I haven’t really seen in the rave reviews these guys already have such as, but certainly not limited to: how the games tie together, how they use graduated stages in each level, the use positive reinforcement with failures, simplistic design and minimalist instruction, and allowing imagination and free play to drive learning.
I am beyond impressed with these apps, clearly they’ve done their instructional design research, and I can’t wait to find out more.
Screens are an inevitable part of our present and our future, If you are going to allow screen time, why not find an app that will be engaging, and teach your child something at the same time? You won’t be nervous about rotting a child’s brain out with Little Bit Studio. Stay tuned for upcoming individual game reviews!
